Foreign Ministry issues statement on the meeting between President Ahmad al-Sharaa and U.S. President Donald Trump

Damascus, SANA- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates issued Wednesday a statement regarding the meeting between President Ahmad al-Sharaa and U.S. President Donald Trump in the Saudi capital, Riyadh.

The Foreign Ministry’s statement read: “A historic meeting took place between Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa, His Royal Highness Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and U.S. President Donald Trump, that also included Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan via a phone call, with the participation of the foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Syria and the United States.

During the meeting, emphasis was placed on the importance of lifting sanctions imposed on Syria and supporting the country’s path toward recovery and reconstruction. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman stressed the necessity of this step to achieve regional stability, while President Trump affirmed his country’s commitment to standing along- side Syria during this pivotal phase. President Ahmad al-Sharaa expressed his gratitude for the regional and international support, under- scoring Syria’s confident progress toward the future.

The discussions also covered avenues for Syrian-American partnership in counterterrorism efforts, and cooperation in eliminating the influence of non-state actors and armed groups that undermine stability, including ISIS and other threats.

A follow-up meeting is scheduled between the Syrian Foreign Minister and his U.S. counterpart, Marco Rubio, to continue bilateral coordination and to build on the understandings reached during this engagement.”
