Iran to increase consultative support for Syria

Tehran, SANA – Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian said that Iran will increase its consultative support for Syria.

In a statement on Saturday, Abdollahian said that Iran has military advisors for counter-terrorism in Syria and Iraq, and that they were sent there upon requests from the two countries’ governments, asserting that there are no Iranian combat troops in Syria.

He asserted that Tehran doesn’t hide anything, and that it had announced that it sent consultants to Syria, adding that Iran will increase its consultative support for Syria.

Earlier on Friday, Ali Akbar Velayati, the advisor on international affairs to the Supreme Leader of Iran, said that Iran is playing a vital role in combating terrorism and extremism, more so than any other country except the states with which it formed alliances to combat terrorism like Iraq and Syria.

During a statement to journalists, Velayati said that Western countries don’t want good things and happiness for the Syrian people as those countries’ goals differ from the aspirations of the Syrians, and that the United States and certain states in the region created the crisis in Syria in order to undermine the resistance axis and to serve Israeli, adding that President Bashar al-Assad is the backbone of resistance in the region and that the majority of the Syrian people support him.

On a relevant note, Chairman of Iranian Shura Council’s Committee for Foreign Policy and National Security Alaeddin Boroujerdi also affirmed that the presence of Iranian experts in Syria is for the purpose of providing consultation, and that if Syria requested Iran to have a military presence in Syria, then Iran will study that request.

Boroujerdi said that Russia’s support for Syria’s counter-terrorism efforts will produce important results within the coming days and weeks, stressing that Russia entering the counter-terrorism arena in Syria produced new conditions for the battle against ISIS that are tangible and not nominal like what the United States is doing.
