Syrian-UN talks on reconstruction and housing rights for displaced citizens

Damascus, SANA- Public Works and Housing Minister, Eng. Mustafa Abdul Razzaq, met with a delegation from Amnesty International, including Christine Beckerle, Deputy Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa, and Diana Semaan, a researcher specializing in Syrian affairs, to explore cooperation in housing, development, and the rights of citizens whose homes were damaged by war.

The meeting, held at the ministry’s headquarters in Damascus, focused on the challenges of rebuilding areas destroyed by the defunct regime, particularly in securing adequate housing and restoring essential services.

Minister Abdul Razzaq emphasized the ministry’s commitment to transforming the human right to housing into actionable policies by addressing issues affecting hundreds of struggling housing associations and providing practical solutions that meet residents’ expectations.

Beckerle, praised the Syrian government’s openness to collaborating with rights institutions, highlighting the importance of justice in reconstruction, housing, and service projects. Meanwhile, Semaan stressed the need to incorporate an approach that respects the rights of indigenous residents in urban planning and guarantees their safe and voluntary return.
