US President Trump: I have decided to lift sanctions imposed on Syria

Riyadh, SANA- US President, Donald Trump, announced on Tuesday the lifting of sanctions on Syria, noting that his administration had taken the first step toward normalizing relations with Syria, and that the foreign ministers of the two countries would meet in Turkey.

“Syria has suffered from extreme misery, death, and prolonged wars and killings that have lasted for years, we hope that the current administration will succeed in bringing stability and preserving peace in Syria,” Trump said in a speech in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, broadcast by Al Arabiya Al Hadath.

Trump added: “I am pleased to announce that Secretary of State Marco Rubio will meet with the Syrian Foreign Minister in Turkey this week. More importantly, after discussing the situation regarding Syria with Saudi Crown Prince, Emir Mohammed bin Salman, and also with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan who called me and requested something similar, in addition to others and friends I respect, who respect the Middle East, I will lift the sanctions on Syria to give them a chance to act.”

Trump noted that those sanctions have indeed served a vital purpose, “but it is time to give Syria a chance, based on the news I am hearing. I wish them good luck, and I hope the outcome will be good and excellent.”
