Information Minister: We must adopt a rational and inclusive approach to combat misinformation

Damascus, SANA-Minister of Information Dr. Hamza al-Mustafa stressed that there are thousands of fake accounts working to spread misinformation and rumors to promote polarization and societal divisions in Syria. To confront them, we must adopt a rational, inclusive discourse and emphasize citizenship.

“The spread of misinformation, rumors, and disinformation is a major challenge facing most countries, including those described as established democracies. This problem is steadily increasing in countries undergoing transitions after long revolutions and major social uprisings.” The minister posted on his official Facebook account.

Minister al-Mustafa added: “The imminent danger facing Syria today as it charts its path toward stability and political consolidation is no longer hidden from everyone, with the presence of hundreds of thousands of fake accounts working day and night to promote polarization and societal divisions.”.

“Many countries have developed various strategies and tools—technical, legal, and editorial—to address this issue. The most effective of these is investing in awareness and persuading the public to manage political disputes peacefully, adopting a rational and inclusive discourse, applying professionalism in media work, and building long-term community partnerships to achieve civil peace. They also emphasize a politically and legally connected citizenship that is inclusive of all, and guarantees equality of rights and duties before the law.” The Minister of Information continued.
