London, SANA-Britain has welcomed the full commitment demonstrated by Syria regarding the destruction of what remains of the chemical weapons program, calling on the international community to provide material and logistical support to help close this file and fold its page permanently.
The British government website quoted Director of Defense and International Security, Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office, Mr. Stephen Lillie , as saying in a statement before the 109th session of the Executive Council of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons in The Hague: “Syria has demonstrated its commitment to destroying the remnants of the Assad regime’s chemical weapons program and to holding those responsible accountable,” describing the Syrian government’s cooperation with the organization’s technical secretariat as “exemplary.”
Lillie urged the international community to act swiftly to close the chemical weapons file in Syria and to provide financial and logistical support to accomplish this mission. He pointed to the announcement by British Foreign Secretary David Lammy during his visit to Damascus earlier this month of an additional 2 million pounds of UK support to the OPCW’s Syria missions. This comes in addition to the 837,000 pounds already transferred since December.
