Damascus, SANA- Culture Minister, Mohammed Yassin Saleh and Qatar’s Ambassador to Damascus Khalifa Abdullah Al Mahmoud Al Sharif discussed ways to develop bilateral ties, particularly in cultural field, in a way that keeps pace with the aspirations of the two countries and enhances the role of culture in building humanity and society.
Minister Saleh appreciated the firm Qatari position towards the Syrian people, praising the positions of His Highness the Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, which supported the aspirations of the Syrians from the first moment of the revolution until achieving victory.
He said that the Ministry was working on a project to rehabilitate Zahiriyya Library, and that it is in the process of benefiting from the Qatari experience in this field.
The idea of cultural twinning between the National Library of Damascus and the Qatar National Library was proposed by the Minister, given the opportunities it offers for exchanging expertise and enhancing research and knowledge cooperation between the two institutions.
Culture Minister referred to the systematic destruction inflicted by the former regime on the Syrian identity, in addition to the destruction of the urban identity in the country, stressing that the Ministry, in cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism and the Damascus Governorate, will be keen to rehabilitate the archaeological and historical areas to be consistent with the cultural and civilizational character of the capital, Damascus.
The Qatari ambassador also offered his country’s proposals regarding cooperation in the project to rehabilitate the Zahiriyya Library in Damascus, due to the knowledge and cultural heritage it carries.
