Expanding scope of UN-provided relief assistance in Sweida discussed

Sweida, SANA – Means to expand the scope of relief assistance provided by the UN to the needy and displaced people in the southern Sweida province was the primary point of discussion in meetings held for this purpose.

Talks were held with Sweida Deputy Governor and the Relief Subcommittee in the province in the presence with other officials concerned.

The visiting UN delegation included UN Resident Coordinator in Syria Yaqoub al-Hilo, Representative of the World Food Program (WFP) Matthew Hollingworth and Director of UN Office for the of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) Sebastien Trives.

Those toured a makeshift residential center hosting displaced families in Rasas town.

Deputy Governor Anwar Zein-Eddin presented a review of the main challenges facing the province, including those related to water, health and education as well as the increasing numbers of displaced families.

He referred to a project being implemented by the governorate to fund micro projects and create job opportunities for people in 80 villages.

Al-Hilo said the visit same in the framework of joint cooperation with the Syrian government in the relief field and within the strategic UN-Syria response plans to provide humanitarian aid to all needy people affected by the situation in the country.

He referred to the need for consultation with the officials concerned in Sweida to tackle meeting the humanitarian needs, which he said have grown in the past period after the arrival of large numbers of people displaced from other provinces.

Al-Hilo pointed out that the UN bodies, in coordination with Sweida governorate and the organizations concerned, will work on establishing projects to create job opportunities.

The scope of partnership to boost aid distribution will be expanded as well, he added.

Representatives of the WFP and OCHA, for their part, said they are ready to cooperate with the Syrian partners, including the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, to carry out new relief and assistance projects.
