Damascus, SANA – The finals of the Syrian Science Olympiad were launched on Sunday with the participation of 388 students from different provinces.

The finals are to determine the winners in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Informatics. They include two rounds of tests in the morning and in the evening, three hours each.

In a statement to the reporters, Head of the National Commission for the Syrian Science Olympiad Imad al-Azb described the competitions this year as “promising” since all of the qualified students have showed up coming from different provinces.

He noted that the questions in the central tests for this year are of an advanced level and can be comparable to those in international Olympiad competitions.

Al-Azb clarified that based on the results of central tests, 50 top students in the five subjects will be chosen, and after following training and qualification, the national teams to represent Syria in international Olympiad competitions in 2016 will be selected, noting that Mathematics Olympiad will be held in Hong Kong, Physics in Switzerland, Chemistry in Pakistan, Informatics in Russia and Biology in Vietnam.

Education Minister Dr. Hazwan al-Waz toured the test centers and stressed to the reporters that the Ministry pays great attention to the excellent students and care to help students choose the right path.

“We in Syria show to everyone that our people are always able to achieve success, especially in such critical circumstances as those currently facing the homeland,” said the Minister.

In the run-up to the finals, 45000 students competed on schools level, with excellent ones qualifying for regions level and winners among the latter making it through to provinces level before reaching today’s tests.

In 2015, the Syrian Science Olympiad student teams won 4 medals and 5 certificates of appreciation in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Informatics at international competitions.
