Higher Education Ministry, WHO discuss ways of supporting university hospitals enhancing cooperation

Damascus, SANA- During a session of talks held Monday at the Higher Education and Scientific Research Ministry, Higher Education Minister Dr. Bassam Ibrahim, World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director of the Eastern Mediterranean Dr. Ahmad al-Manzari, WHO Representative to Syrian Arab Republic Dr. Akjemal Magtymova, and the accompanying delegation discussed ways of supporting university hospitals and developing mutual cooperation between the two sides during the coming stage.

The two sides reviewed the reality of the health sector at higher education hospitals and their role in providing diagnostic, therapeutic and, medical care for citizens in accordance with the approved national health policy, and in qualifying and training the students of medical faculties and health sciences, in addition to the cooperation agreements with the WHO and the assistances provided by the organization to the university hospitals and the projects which are being carried out by the ministry.

Minister Ibrahim affirmed the importance of the participatory work between the ministry and the WHO, especially after targeting the health sector and sabotaging a number of hospital as result of the terrorist attacks, indicating that the ministry has taken measures to compensate for the shortage in the medical cadres.

For his part, Dr. al-Manzari highly appreciated the medical and educational services provided by the university hospitals despite of the difficult challenges imposed by the current circumstances in Syria and their role in completing the role played by the hospitals and centers which are affiliated to the Health Ministry.

He asserted that organization will continue to support the health sector in Syria in a way that serves the interests of the citizens and in cooperation with the Ministry of Higher Education.
