Abdrakhmanov: Date and agenda of any future meeting on Syria in Astana depend on results of Geneva talks

Astana, SANA-Kazakh Foreign Minister Kairat Abdrakhmanov announced on Tuesday that the date and the agenda of any next meeting on Syria in the Kazakh capital of Astana depend on the results of Syrian-Syrian dialogue in Geneva.

In an interview with Sputnik in Geneva, Abdrakhmanov said his country is waiting for information from the guarantor states of the cessation of hostilities agreement in Syria about the date of their next meeting in Astana.

He pointed out that he plans to hold a meeting with UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura on Wednesday to discuss the progress in the Syrian-Syrian talks in Geneva. He also did not rule out the possibility of holding a meeting with the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov.

Kazakhstan ready to host another technical meeting on Syria if needed

Kazakh Deputy Foreign Minister Mukhtar Tleuberdi said that Kazakhstan is ready to host another technical meeting on settling the Syrian crisis, should the need for such a meeting arise,

“We are waiting for some information. Nothing can be said for sure yet, the Geneva talks on Syria are underway. Depending on their progress, the need for technical meetings will be assessed,” Tleuberdi added.

Kazakh diplomat stressed that after the Geneva talks conclude, it will become clear “what issues should be discussed at technical meetings, whether it will be the ceasefire or compliance with the guarantees.”

Tleuberdi reiterated that Kazakhstan was always ready to provide a platform for international meetings on solving the Syrian crisis.

The Kazakh capital hosted two meetings on Syria; the first meeting was held on January 23 – 24, as its final statement stressed commitment to Syria’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity while the second one was on February 16
and discussed enhancing the cessation of hostilities in Syria.
