Washington, SANA _ The group of 24 recently held its meetings at the headquarters of the World Monetary Fund in Washington under the presidency of Syria who chairs the Group for the year 2009.
During the meeting, Governor of the Central Bank of Syria, Dr. Adib Mayyaleh delivered a speech in which he discussed the need to unify efforts and give a great interest in the confrontation of the current global financial crisis.
" Dealing with this crisis and avoiding the deterioration of the economic and financial situation of the global economy requires joint efforts, effective coordination of policies and the continued mobilization of international resources for development," Mayyaleh said.
He touched upon other topics of interest to the developing countries such as the reform of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank to be more fair.
"In the framework of international cooperation in addressing the impact of the global crisis, the G24 has taken the initiative to propose a work plan to be added to the agenda of the G20 summit," Mayyaleh said, explaining that the work plan sets out the views of the G24, which represents the developing countries, to issues of international financial reform and measures to limit the negative effects of the global financial crisis to ensure continued funding of development in these countries.
The work plan also called on leaders of the G20 to take all measures necessary for the stability of the international financial system, its reform and the reactivation of the international application.
The work plan called for a solution to inadequate funding for the developing countries, reform of governance in international financial institutions and the expansion of the Financial Stability Forum and the Basel Committee.
It also focused on reforming the International Monetary Fund to enable it to provide the needed credit facilities, and provide the necessary financial resources for the World Bank in order to safeguard investment in the developing countries.
