Armed Group Seizes Rooftops in Lattakia, Open Fire at Passers-by, Citizens and Security Forces Personnel

Mar 27, 2011

Lattakia, Damascus, SANA_ An official source said an armed group seized rooftops in some districts of Lattakia on Saturday, opening fire at passers-by, citizens and security forces personnel.

Presidential Political and Media Advisor Dr. Bouthaina Shaaban said it is clear that there is a sedition scheme against Syria through targeting the model of coexistence in it.

''This scheme is not new,'' Dr. Shaaban said, adding that the Syrians are fully aware of these subversive attempts and will surpass them.

She gave an account of what happened in al-Sanamin city near Daraa on Friday, clarifying that a group of gunmen and smugglers came to the police station and seized arms before heading to a security department and seizing arms as well, then they headed to a military checkpoint and opened fire, which necessitated a response by the checkpoint guards in self-defense.''

On the situation in Homs, Dr. Shaaban said a small group set off from the Old Square in Homs heading to the Officers' Club close to the Clock Square, smashing windows and destroying the contents, killing one person who had been at the Club.

In Lattakia, she said that an armed group coming from a camp at the southern part of Lattakia headed to the downtown, vandalizing and setting fire to shops as the security forces refrained from opening fire. After two hours of destruction, a gunman killed two security forces personnel and one of the demonstrators.

Shaaban said the right to demonstration for the Syrian citizens is safeguarded, describing the goings-on as an attempt to spark sedition and target security, stability and lives of the citizens.

The Presidential Advisor stressed that Syria will stand firm against the attempts tampering with its security and stability.

''Most of the Syrians saw the announced reforms as bold…We stick to what the people in Syria want and will work to accomplish it.''

Lattakia hospitals yesterday received about 150 wounded persons, mostly security forces members. Director of Al-Assad University Hospital Dr. Munir Osman said the hospital received 90 injured, 80 of them are security forces members while Lattakia National Hospital, according to its Director Monther Baghdadi, received about 60 including 50 security forces members.

The injuries varied between actual gunshot wounds with knives and iron bars.

A number of wounded told SANA reporter that they were directly attacked and the security forces didn't get in touch with attackers.

SANA correspondent in Daraa said the governorate's inhabitants escorted a number of bodies today including those who attacked the people's army headquarters in al-Sanamin.

The funerals didn't witness any clash or contact with the security forces, where dignitaries and clergymen called for calm and national unity to overcome the plot and sedition hatched against Syria.

In Tafas, a number of persons attacked a number of institutions and service facilities causing damage.

In Homs, the body of martyr Adel Fandi, killed yesterday by an armed gang, was escorted.

An armed gang exploited gathering of some citizens in Homs and stormed the officers club, opened fire and attacked people and facilities causing damage to the shops and some facilities.
