Ambassador Mustafa: Obama Administration Lifts Embargo on Syria in Fields Pertaining to Civil Aviation Safety and Communications and Information Technology

Jul 27, 2009

Damascus, (SANA) – Syria's Ambassador in Washington Dr. Imad Mustafa said on Sunday that the Syrian Embassy was officially informed that the US embargo imposed on Syria in all fields pertaining to civil aviation safety and civil plane spare parts has been lifted, as well as the embargo on exporting communications and information systems equipment and technology to Syria, including software, hardware and internet-related equipment.

In an interview with the Syrian Television, Ambassador Mustafa said the US President Barack Obama suspended some of the articles of the US sanctions on Syria, adding that there are directives to suspend more articles at an increasing rate.

He pointed out that abolishing the sanctions law is a complicated issue since it requires legislations from the US Congress, affirming that senior Congress members are inclined to overcome the stage of hostility with Syria, and that they are displeased with the sanctions law and consider it a burden on the United States of America.

Ambassador Mustafa said "We are focusing with President Obama's administration on using the US President's executive authority to suspend the execution of the important articles in the sanctions law," adding that the Obama administration is considering suspending other articles, and that they said that they are working on suspending articles one at a time until the law is void.

He pointed out that the Zionist lobby in the United States is strong, but it doesn't control all facets of life in America, as there are US industrial and financial companies that are displeased with the US policies towards Syria and consider them to be harmful to their interests, particularly regarding cooperation between US and Syrian universities, in addition to the Boeing Company which is very displeased with the sanctions imposed on Syria.

Ambassador Mustafa noted that the current US administration is fully aware that improving bilateral relations with Syria will have a positive effect on the peace process, adding that President Obama asked US Special Envoy to the Middle East Senator George Mitchell to personally handle the issue of Syrian-American bilateral relations.
