New training stage for Science Olympiad teams to prepare for July international competitions

Damascus, SANA – A new stage of the scientific qualification and training programs for national teams have been launched by the National Commission for the Syrian Science Olympiad.

The programs are aimed at preparing the national teams for participation in the forthcoming international Olympiad competitions due to be held in July.

Chairman of the Commission Imad al-Azb explained in a statement to SANA that this second stage of the training programs will be carried out at the level of provinces where the teams’ members are residing.

A final preparation stage, however, will be held in Damascus in June where all members are brought together.

On March 7th, the National Commission for the Syrian Science Olympiad announced the names of teams which will be representing Syria in international competitions in math, physics, chemistry, biology, and IT. The announcement followed a test in which 101 youths from various provinces competed.

The upcoming Olympiad competitions include math in Thailand, physics in India, chemistry in Azerbaijan, biology in Denmark and informatics in Kazakhstan.

In 2014, the Syrian Olympiad teams won an international silver medal in informatics, a regional silver medal in math, an international bronze medal in chemistry and two regional bronze medals in informatics. They also earned international certificates of appreciation in math and physics.
