Mikdad, Iraqi counterpart discuss joint coordination to combat terrorism, face challenges

New York, SANA- Foreign and Expatriates Minister, Dr. Fayssal Mikdad, has discussed with Iraqi counterpart Fouad Hussein the latest developments in the Arab arena and the common challenges facing the two brotherly countries, particularly in the domain of combating terrorism.

That came during a meeting held Saturday on the sidelines of the 77th Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 77).

The two sides underlined the importance of the joint cooperation and coordination to face all the challenges, particularly in the domain of combating terrorism and achieving security and stability in the two countries and ensuring the respect for their unity and territorial integrity.

Minister Mikdad presented a briefing on the US and Turkish illegal practices in Syria, particularly their support for the terrorist organizations and depriving the Syrian people of their natural resources.

The two ministers highlighted the importance of strengthening bilateral relations, as their views converged on raising their pace, especially in the economic field, in light of the difficult conditions the two countries are going through.

In another context, Minister Mikdad met with the Executive Director of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Achim Steiner.

The two sides discussed aspects of the program’s work in Syria and ways to enhance its activities, including the implementation of the strategic framework document for the work of the United Nations, especially the in-country program, in addition to ensuring the implementation of early recovery projects stipulated in Resolution 2642 In the fields of water, electricity, health and education

Minister Mikdad referred to the disastrous effects of terrorism and unilateral coercive measures on the daily lives of Syrians.

In turn, Steiner expressed thanks to Syria for the facilities it provides for the work of the program and its quest to enhance and increase its activities in Syria.
