Track and field athletes from Lattakia come to light as int’l champions

Lattakia, SANA – Many track and field athletes from Lattakia province have been increasingly acclaimed after winning Arab and international titles over the past few years.

Chairman of the Athletics Technical Sub-committee in Lattakia Mustafa Jaafar stressed that the province has already produced many male and female champions, “who have remarkably come to light on the local, national
and international levels.”

He cited among Syria’s athletics champions who made achievements in 2010 and 2011 the athlete Marah Dala who won the third place and the silver medal of the long jump competition of Qatar international championship.

Ali Nouh also won the fifth place in 1500 m race in the same championship, which also saw the participation of Yara Fares, Fatima Raya, NOUR AL-Sous and Amal Saqr, Jaafar told SANA Sports reporter.

He also referred to Hala Ghaiya who was crowned the title of West Asia Championship of Aleppo 2010 in javelin competition.

During the same championship, Marah Dala won the gold medal of long jump competition, while Miryana Sqeir won the bronze medal of the 100 m hurdles competition of 2010 Egypt Championship. Hala Ghaya also won the bronze medal in javelin.

In 2011, Aya Abbas won the gold medal of 5km walk in West Asia Championship in Lebanon, which also saw Hala Ghaya winning the gold medals in javelin and shot put.

Ghaya also came in the third place in javelin competition during her participation in the 7th Arab Athletics Championship in the United Arab Emirates in 2011, while Nour al-Sous came fourth in heptathlon and fifth in
100 m hurdles.

SANA Sports reporter quoted Jaafar as also saying that in 2012, Nour al-Sous won the second place and the silver medal of the heptathlon competition within the 15th Arab Championship held in Jordan, with Hala Ghaya coming
fourth in javelin.

Al-Sous was also ranked fourth in heptathlon in Asia Championship in Sri Lanka in the same year.

Fatima Raya won the gold medal of 2000 m steeplechase in Asia Championship of 2013 in China and the gold medal in the same competition of Asia Championship in Thailand, 2013.

Mais Barhoum also participated in the Thailand Championship and came sixth in javelin.

In the same year, Aya Abbas was ranked first in 5000 m walk in West Asia Championship in Jordan.
