Jan. 12, UN Charter against Genocide was enforced

 

1816 – France exiles Napoleon Bonaparte’s family following his defeat in the Battle of Waterloo against the British forces, while he was exiled to Saint Helena island.

1896- 1st X-ray photo in US was taken by Dr. Henry Smith at Davidson at North Carolina .

1915- US Congress rejects a draft project on granting women the rights to vote.

1924 – First parliamentary elections held in Egypt.

1944- Nazi forces withdraw from Leningrad after two years siege.

1945- Mikawa earthquake in Japan kills 1900 persons.

1961- UN genocide pact goes into effect.

1974 – Unity between Tunisia and Libya announced, which was scheduled to form the Arab Islamic Republic, but failed after 24 hours.

1976- UN Security Council votes 11-1 to seat Palestine Liberation Organisation.

2008- Pakistani parliamentary elections delayed following the assassination of Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

2011 – 11 ministers, representing the Change and Reform bloc, Hezbollah, Amal Movement, resign from Lebanese government, causing the government to lose its legitimacy.
