Foreign Trade Minister: Syria interested in joining Eurasian Customs Union

Damascus, SANA – Minister of Economy and Foreign Trade Humam al-Jazaeri said Syria is interested in joining the Eurasian Customs Union, or the Customs Union of Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Russia.

During a meeting with the Ambassador of Belarus in Damascus Alexander Ponomarev on Saturday, al-Jazaeri called for granting preferential tariff treatment to certain goods traded between Syria and Belarus while awaiting for tangible steps towards accession to the Union.

He said it is important that the legal frame regulating the cooperation relations between both countries be implemented and legislative rules already in place in Syria, such as the partnership law, be utilized to help establish investment projects of mutual benefit for both sides.

For his part, the Belarusian Ambassador said the current trade exchange between his country and Syria is not up to the level of aspirations, voicing Belarus’s desire to boost economic and trade relations with Syria.

He stressed the importance that the meetings of the upcoming Joint Syrian-Belarusian Cooperation Committee be made a success so as new agreements that serve the best interests of both countries are reached.
