Syria, ESCWA discuss bolstering cooperation

Damascus, SANA- Deputy Foreign and Expatriates Minister Fayssal Mikdad discussed with Acting Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) Mounir Tabet and the accompanying delegation joint work and means of cooperation between Syria and ESCWA at the economic and social levels, mainly following the signing of a framework agreement between the two sides to identify the fields in which ESCWA can provide technical support for Syria.

Mikdad emphasized that cooperation with ESCWA has been close as Syria has built developing relations with it and carried out many projects prior to the terrorist war against Syria and it is currently participating actively in the commission’s activities and supporting it within the framework of the objectives for which it was established.

Mikdad shed light on the catastrophic effects of the unilateral economic sanctions imposed by the West on Syria, stressing on the pivotal role of the UN organizations in general and ESCWA in particular in alerting to the dangers of these sanctions and their effects, not only on the Syrian people but also on the peoples of the region and the world.

For his part, Tabet expressed ESCWA’s appreciation for Syria’s active participation in the commission’s activities, adding that the signing of the framework agreement with Syria, represented by the Planning and International Cooperation Authority affirms its importance as a an ESCWA member state.

ESCWA will cooperate with other UN organizations operating in Syria and the Syrian authorities concerned to implement the agreement, Tabet said.
